Downing Street has confirmed that a military plane used by Boris Johnson will be painted red, white and blue at a cost of almost £1 million.

Opposition MPs have reacted with fury after news of the pricey paint job emerged.

The grey RAF Voyager jet is getting its makeover at an airport in Cambridge.

A spokesperson for the prime minister said today that work to do over the plane with the "national branding" is costing “around £900,000”.

One defence source reportedly described the design as something “from Austin Powers”.

Acting Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey compared the million pound bill with the cost of drugs used to treat Covid-19 patients.

“The drug dexamethasone, that can potentially save the lives of people with coronavirus, costs £5 per patient," he tweeted.

“Boris Johnson could have bought 180,000 doses of that, but instead he’s painting a flag on a plane.”

Labour MP Emma Hardy said: “For goodness sake. Please can we have a grown up as a Prime Minister instead of a child.”

And her party colleague Justin Madders tweeted: “What’s he painting it with, gold leaf?”

Mr Johnson's official spokesman pointed out that he was not the only person using the aircraft.

“The RAF Voyager used by the royal family and the Prime Minister is currently in Cambridgeshire for pre-planned repainting," they said.
